Discover the legend of Moondyne Joe, a folk hero, bushranger and notorious convict. Joseph Bolitho Johns is famous for his daring prison escapes. This vibrant children's exhibition reimagines his story for younger audiences through history, storytelling and art, offering a fresh interpretation of one of Western Australia's most iconic figures. At the heart of this exhibition is the recently acquired collection of original illustrations and drafts from the much-loved picture book of the same name by Mark Greenwood and Frané Lessac. These are presented alongside heritage items from the State Library collection.

09 May 2026 - 13 Sep 2026

An immersive exhibition centred around newly recorded video oral histories of Menang Elders and a large-scale visual meditation on the Kinjarling/Albany landscape. This exhibition marks 200 years since colonisation began on Menang Country and asks visitors to encounter Kinjarling not as a backdrop to history, but as a living landscape with its own voice and memory. The stories within this exhibition have been recorded to add important new layers of meaning to the largely colonial maps, photographs and illustrations in the State Library's collection. Visitors will step into a quiet 6-metre-wide dome inspired by a kornt (a traditional shelter) to hear the Elders' stories. These include reflections by Carol Pettersen, Lester Coyne, Mark Colbung, Vernice Gillies, Doreen Hancox, Sharrlyn Maddren and a young Menang ranger, Cleve Humphries. This immersive experience also features a specially commissioned animation that reinterprets the State Library's collections through a Menang lens, weaving Menang artist and academic Shandell Cumming's artworks with centuries-old maps, photographs and illustrations to reveal new ways of seeing and understanding these materials. The exhibition gives new voices and stories to evocative landscape photographs taken by government and commercial photographers over many decades. This exhibition is curated by Denien Toomath, a Menang Noongar woman and Senior Partnerships Officer at the State Library. Produced by the State Library of Western Australia in partnership with the Community Arts Network.

Pete's been dumped. Days before the wedding, his fiancée calls him "a robot", and bails for a new lover. So, he does what anyone would do: turns to AI for advice. "The best revenge is living well" it replies in all of 1.49 seconds. So Pete - the hapless, the loser, the schmuck - does just that. Tries to live well. If only it were that simple. What follows is a spiral of outrageous encounters, disastrous own-goals, and spectacular bad luck, as Pete stumbles through a world that seems determined to leave him behind. Unravelling in 45 chapters, Will O'Mahony's darkly hilarious new work asks: What happens when the world moves faster than legs can run? If you've been kicked off the bus of life, is there any chance of climbing back on? And is it possible AI overlords are among, hiding in plain sight?
