The trees speak in captivating colour and librettos soar across pristine sands. Giants roam the city streets, stars light up under the Milky Way, and fairytales come to life.

Perth Festival is a cultural cavalcade that has been firing imaginations and lifting spirits for more than 70 years, sharing hundreds of spellbinding stories in myriad artforms over three glorious weeks.

Australia’s longest-running arts festival brings world-class performance, music, film, visual arts and literary voices to Perth (Boorloo). It also raises the voices of one of the world’s oldest living cultures in the most magnificent ways.

Held on Noongar Boodjar (land), where the warmth of the sun (Ngaangk) is felt long after it sets over the spectacular Indian Ocean, this is a festival of and for the people.

Feel the spirit of connection

The language of Boorloo takes majestic flight in an original opera sung entirely in Noongar. A world premiere is just one way the festival elevates art thousands of years in the making. Haunting glass works shed light on a dark past; artists reveal how ancient wisdom can help solve a modern-day crisis; and First Nations writers discuss the power of storytelling. Start your journey of discovery before the festival with an Aboriginal cultural tour along the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), where Noongar guides bring the past to life.

Soak up the sounds

From hip hop in the Supreme Court Gardens, a short stroll from the stunning Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), to neo soul in The Rechabite, in the heart of bustling Northbridge, cool sounds ring out around Boorloo and beyond throughout the festival. Join First Nations sensations for the deadliest block party. Listen to opera on Scarborough Beach as waves lap the shore. Lose yourself in classical heaven at Perth Concert Hall. Just don’t forget to feed your belly as well as your soul at one of the many great bars and restaurants nearby each venue.

Make star gazing an artform

Where better to watch stars perform than under the stars? Perth’s sultry summer evenings are made for outdoor entertainment. Sink into a chair between the towering pines at the Somerville, an enchanting natural cinema where birdsong is the backdrop to a riveting roster of international films. Bring a picnic rug to the Supreme Court Gardens and chill out to a glittering line-up of local and international stars. Enjoy a late-afternoon dip at one of Perth’s 19 stunning beaches before settling in for an operatic adventure by the ocean.  Just don’t forget to look up now and then at the show nature is putting on above.

See art in surreal spaces

Artists have that magical ability to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary, whether reinventing disused spaces or finding innovative ways to tell their stories. An old shopping precinct is given new life as an indoor wetland, plants that once hugged the Swan River shrouding escalators. An atrium window becomes a giant kaleidoscope, flooding the space with coloured shafts of light. A public swimming pool is turned into a theatre where everyone gets to splash about. A theatre morphs into a giant dining table where all the senses come alive. The surreal becomes real.

Find the free and fabulous

From morning meditations to guided astrological dances, street poetry to lively conversations about anything and everything, the festival program is always packed with things to see and do that don’t cost a cent. You can wander art exhibitions from Perth (Boorloo) to Fremantle (Walyalup), don op shop bargains for a prom party with a difference, and groove to world-class musicians under the stars.  All for free.

Pete's been dumped. Days before the wedding, his fiancée calls him "a robot", and bails for a new lover. So, he does what anyone would do: turns to AI for advice. "The best revenge is living well" it replies in all of 1.49 seconds. So Pete - the hapless, the loser, the schmuck - does just that. Tries to live well. If only it were that simple. What follows is a spiral of outrageous encounters, disastrous own-goals, and spectacular bad luck, as Pete stumbles through a world that seems determined to leave him behind. Unravelling in 45 chapters, Will O'Mahony's darkly hilarious new work asks: What happens when the world moves faster than legs can run? If you've been kicked off the bus of life, is there any chance of climbing back on? And is it possible AI overlords are among, hiding in plain sight?

In the beginning, spirits and deities created the Islander world. Ancestors like Sida of Papua New Guinea, Gelam of Moa, and Waiet of Mabuiag shaped the islands, giving each unique attributes: The fertile abundance of Mer, the inland waters of Erub, and the rugged rocky foreshores of Moa. Malu, the Kala Lagaw Ya word for sea/ocean, extends beyond a simple description of water. It speaks of a living ancestral realm binding Torres Strait Islander people to spirit, memory, navigation, and identity. In this exhibition, located in the Level 1 Corridor of WA Museum Boola Bardip, the ocean becomes both archive and witness, honouring Malu as both origin and living presence – keeper of memory where every tide, wave, and current leaves marks upon the land, people, and the spirit of Sea Country.

All the secrets are buried between the oceans and the mountains, is the first solo exhibition by acclaimed Western Australian artist Stormie Mills to be held at an Australian state gallery. A defining figure in Australian street art, Mills has spent four decades shaping the visual language of contemporary urban culture. This landmark exhibition presents a new body of work reflecting his global movements, personal history, and the encounters that have informed his distinctive practice since he first began painting in 1984. Through his sustained practice, Mills has played a pivotal role in advancing street art as a recognised contemporary art form, helping shift public perception from underground graffiti to a respected and influential movement. His works, rendered in a restrained palette of black, white, grey and silver, explore themes of isolation, tenderness, resilience and the human condition. Their quiet vulnerability and hope have resonated with audiences across cultures and continents. All the secrets are buried between the oceans and the mountains brings together a significant body of new and recent works that reflect Mills' desire to connect intimately with others through painting, through storytelling, and through shared emotional experience.

An immersive exhibition centred around newly recorded video oral histories of Menang Elders and a large-scale visual meditation on the Kinjarling/Albany landscape. This exhibition marks 200 years since colonisation began on Menang Country and asks visitors to encounter Kinjarling not as a backdrop to history, but as a living landscape with its own voice and memory. The stories within this exhibition have been recorded to add important new layers of meaning to the largely colonial maps, photographs and illustrations in the State Library's collection. Visitors will step into a quiet 6-metre-wide dome inspired by a kornt (a traditional shelter) to hear the Elders' stories. These include reflections by Carol Pettersen, Lester Coyne, Mark Colbung, Vernice Gillies, Doreen Hancox, Sharrlyn Maddren and a young Menang ranger, Cleve Humphries. This immersive experience also features a specially commissioned animation that reinterprets the State Library's collections through a Menang lens, weaving Menang artist and academic Shandell Cumming's artworks with centuries-old maps, photographs and illustrations to reveal new ways of seeing and understanding these materials. The exhibition gives new voices and stories to evocative landscape photographs taken by government and commercial photographers over many decades. This exhibition is curated by Denien Toomath, a Menang Noongar woman and Senior Partnerships Officer at the State Library. Produced by the State Library of Western Australia in partnership with the Community Arts Network.
